Piano Basics for Online Mobile Learning
Greetings and Welcome!
My name is Adam Halemano. I am a graduate student with the Department of Educational Technology (ETEC) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UH). As a qualification for my Master's degree program, I am required to conduct a formal research project.
The purpose of my project is to develop and evaluate a web-based instructional module teaching beginner level adult students with little to no musical background how to identify and engage in playing chords, scales, and melodies on a contemporary piano keyboard.

I am asking you to participate in this project because you are at least 18 years of age and have experience with and access to both a personal computer and iPad tablet with Internet connectivity. Please read the following list of anticipated objectives and participant liberties for this research project. If you would like to participate in this instructional module, please complete the consent form below.
Activities and Time Committment
If you elect to participate in this study, you will be asked to complete the following:
Fill out a pre-survey demographic questionnaire consisting of a few multiple choice questions about your professional and academic background and your prior experience with musical instruments (5-10 minutes / total time).
Fill out a post-survey attitudinal questionnaire consisting of ten (10) 5-point scale questions and two (2) open ended questions about the efficacy of this instructional design project
(5-10 minutes / total time). |
Complete a pre-test evaluation form to help assess your current knowledge and understanding of basic piano concepts (5-10 minutes / total time).
Complete a post-test evaluation form to help assess student learner outcomes upon completion of the piano basics instructional module (5-10 minutes / total time).

Benefits and Risks
There will be no direct benefit to you for participating in this survey. The results of this project may contribute to a better understanding of speech to text technology and its uses with mobile learning in education. There is little risk to you in participating in this project.
Confidentiality and Privacy
The surveys and tests are employed with a valued understanding for anonymity and are deemed highly confidential with the utmost respect for personal privacy. The study will not solicit any personal information that could be used to identify you. Likewise, please do not include any personal information, such as your name, in your survey responses.
Voluntary Participation
Participation in this project is voluntary. You can freely choose to participate or to not participate in this survey, and there will be no penalty or loss of benefits for either decision. If you agree to participate, you can stop at any time without any penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.

ID Number GeneratorAs a means of maintaining participant anonymity, a random number generator is utilized to create a unique ID number for this survey study.
